One of the conversations I had in response to yesterday's post made me want to take a snapshot of my current bookmark and tag statistics on rec_room.

At least 70% of the fiction I look at, I get no more than three paragraphs in and then close the tab.

Wow. That's a pretty low hit rate, which means, I guess, that you are indiscriminate about what you try (which is good!). I think I finish a lot higher percentage of what I open, but (these days) I don't actually (attempt to) read that much fic.

Yeah, that percentage really depends on the day, but at the moment the "close tab" rate is running high.

It's not always like that. Some days, everything I read is from a rec list, so I finish more. I had a better hit rate in the heyday of my reading of the SGA newsletter too.

But I'm currently figuring out Torchwood fandom, which means that yes, I'm indiscriminate, because I don't know where all the good stuff is reliably found yet. Plus, the hit rate from the newsletter is often zero! I still find that hard to believe; it just boggles me. God, I was so spoiled in SGA. Even rec lists in TW can be... interesting.

In any case, my exploration is skewing the stats at the moment, because I am opening and awful lot of tabs, and reading to the end in very, very few.

I do feel that I'm getting in touch with my feelings about badfic though. Veeery intimately. ;)

When I have just fallen in love with a fandom I read (or open) just about EVERYTHING. But I haven't been in that state for a while. Even my new fandoms I am picky in, and it didn't take me long to discover that most of the writers currently posting in Sharpe, Hornblower, LotR, and LotRPS fail to ring my chimes. Alas.

When I started reading SGA fic, I read a lot of stories that were "okay," many that were blah, and a few gems. When I realized most of the "gems authors" were on lj is when I got my own lj, so I could track them better. I decided that good writers would likely friend each other, so I branched out that way. I love your rec room, because it lets me find some of the stragglers I would otherwise miss. In fact I just picked up a couple stories today that are new to me ( ... )
