Is there anything more decadent than snacking on banana dipped in melted chocolate? (nomnomnom)

Does Torchwood fandom have the best timetravel and time paradox stories ever, or what? (do not tell me Dr Who is better -- I don't have time to read in that fandom ( Read more... )

Is it just me, or do you get a jittery Chistmas-morning feeling when you imagine the next episode of [info]rageprufrock's Merlin AU, Redefining Protocol? (omg, I think she's going to have Merlin attend official functions as Arthur's partner and then write up snippets of the following news reports. *stuffs fist in mouth and makes embarrassing noises*)

It's not just you! Also, if you're looking for Torchwood recs, my del.icio.us has some - they're likely to be pretty old, as I haven't read much TW in the last year, but if you want see what were the best stories in the first year of the fandom, there's some stuff.

There are a few things that make it impossible to contain my squee, characterized by my trying to describe to the mystified, non-fannish flatmate the awesomeness that is X, in this case Drastically Redefining Protocol. That's like...uh... trying to explain llamas to someone who doesn't know South America exists /o\

but, hey. I have a nooby question. Who exactly is the Dr. Space Opera of your icon?

Explaining things to non-fans is hard. I've just about given up having conversations about pop-culture with non-fans -- I can't be bothered with all that work.

Re the icon: the pic is of Elijah Wood in glasses. Lotrips was the first major fandom in which I wrote fic, and I mainly wrote Elijah/Orlando.

But I am the Dr of Space Opera -- that was my thesis topic. :)

The Jack mpreg exists. It's by robling_t and it's called Yours, Mine, and Ours, and the author describes it thus:

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from a buttload of trouble, in the wrong hands. What part of 'the Chameleon Arch is not a toy' didn't they understand...? (Yes, this is baby!fic. On crack. With guns. And weevils. And Jack. Check your expectations at the door, because this is Torchwood, and nothing is ever what it seems...)"

I feel I should give you sufficient notice that it is a DW/TW crossover and therefore might be considered gateway fic. But then, I don't understand how anyone could get into TW without first getting into DW (I'm a rabid DW fan and I refuse to watch TW, though I do occasionally read the fic for it, because the fanwriters are, from everything I've heard, better than the scriptwriters for that show).

Oh, cool! Thank you so much for the rec. It sounds gloriously cracky.

I'm perfectly happy to read crossover fic -- I've been a Who fan since the Pertwee days, so it's an old friend. I haven't yet had a chance to watch the last couple of season of New Who, but that is next on my viewing list!

As for not watching Torchwood, I can understand that. The first season was very hit and miss, and several of the plots tipped over the line from interestingly cracked to plain silly (I'm a fan of cracked, but silly tends to annoy me). However, season 2 trod that line really well, and was a thoroughly enjoyable romp -- the writers had finally found their feet. So if you ever do get the urge to watch, keep that in mind.

There's no doubt the Who premise is better, but I'm a real sucker for teams (even though I tend to focus on a particular pairing), so in that regard, Torchwood suits me better as a fanfic fandom.

I think my biggest problem with Torchwood is that they'll often have people act out-of-character to forward the plot. In that respect, the fanfics are probably better than the show.

When they do do a good episode thought, it's very good. But for my tastes there aren't enough good ones to make it worth owning the series, which is a shame. It's why I only bring in the Torchwood DVDs for specific orders, rather than having them as stock - I don't wish to be stuck with any.

Doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to the epic season 3 storyline, though :)

*nods* Yeah, there's no doubt that Torchwood is a flawed show in several ways. I have to say, though, that watching it all at once, I suspect it stands up much better than as weekly episodes. I didn't have time to be annoyed with the stupid bits, and my overall impression ended up being The Good Bits Version, as those scenes stuck in my mind best. And then I read the fanfic, and it fixed all the dodgy bits anyway. :)

I am quite keen to see what they come up with for season 3. I've decided that the shorter Brit seasons are much kinder to quirky shows, as they don't get to the point of losing their charm anywhere near as fast.

I'm also very keen to see the latest seasons of Who, although I'm just finishing up TSCC first, which is much better than I was expecting.

Well, I've got a Jack MPreg (or at last Jack-as-"mother") fic in the works for tardis_bigbang this year...

I've also got a piece that's just a scene or two about Jack discovering that this particular pregnancy scare really *is* something to worry about (every 3-4 months, Jack comes tearing into Owen's lab and demands a blood test for unusual chemicals, never specifying what they might *be*. The one time Owen gets behind and starts the test late (and then BS's that it was normal, like it always is, b/c he's Owen), is the one time it shows up funky...
