“I think I’ll pass, I just don’t feel like going out.”

Adam’s voice lacked the luster Kris had remembered. Since the tour finished a year ago, Kris and Adam hadn’t seen each other much but they talked at least three times a week. Adam was a success in LA and so was Kris in Nashville. Much had happened that year in their personal lives as well. Kris was single again and while he had gone on casual dates, he wasn’t expecting any of them to be the next love of his life.

Adam was a different story. Drake broke up with him a month after they had come home from touring. Since then, Adam had gone from one relationship to another. He poured his heart and soul into each man, only ending up used and alone. He stopped going out to clubs. Friends tried to set him up on blind dates and he never showed. It was all work, work, work and the rest of his time was spent in his new home, reliving old memories.

“Adam, you have to go,” Kris urged over the phone. Long distance counseling was a bitch. “19 Entertainment is celebrating a bang up year, and you’re a big part of that.”

“So are you and Allison but neither of you are going.” He paused. “They won’t miss me.”

Kris was getting fed up with this self pity. “Snap out of it! Don’t think of it as socializing, think of it as networking. If you’re so damn set on being miserable, take this as an opportunity to get more work to hide behind so you can forget how shitty your personal life is!” Kris hoped tough love would bring Adam around.

The other end of the line seemed silent forever.

“You’re damn lucky you’re in Nashville.” Adam sounded mad - good; he was feeling something - then he started laughing. “You’d think as a songwriter you’d come up with something more original - my mom gave me the same lecture this morning.” He waited for Kris to laugh - he didn’t. “Okay, okay, I’ll go but I’m won’t enjoy myself.”

“I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.”

The invitation read ‘summer casual’ so he guessed black was out. He hadn’t been spending much time on his look anyway, except when a stylist ‘made him up’ for public appearances. He had started wearing whatever and only eyeliner, smudged of course (being depressed was no excuse not to look good).

His mom had bought him some new clothes last week in an effort to cheer him up. The cotton shirt and pants were light and airy, in contrast to his mood she said, and oddly enough, they were perfect for ‘summer casual’. He slipped on the white pants - not as tight as he liked but comfortable and pulled on the sky blue tunic decorated around the deep V collar with white paisley swirls. No products, deciding to let his hair have the night off. A re-smudge of eyeliner, tan flip flops and he was out the door.

Adam didn’t know who was hosting the party but it was by the ocean. With each mile he drove, he told himself at least once that he’d stay long enough to be polite and then slip out. There were bound to be lots of people there. He could probably meet someone to hook up with but in all honesty, the only people he wanted to see were Kris and Allison. Allison was touring Europe and Kris, well Kris was half a country away. God, did he miss him.

Passing through the gate, Adam maneuvered up the long, palm lined driveway to the beachside house. A valet took his car and directed him towards the side of the house and an arbor covered in hundreds of tiny white lights. The ocean crashed in the distance and soft jazz music filled the warm evening air. He recognized the song; it was Billie Holiday’s rendition of “The Very Thought of You.”

The backyard was beautiful. Lanterns crisscrossed the patio, candles floated on the pool, and pedestals of red and white roses surrounded the yard. The only things missing were the other guests. At the far side of the patio was an elegant tent under which was a solitary table, a table set for two.

“If lying is the only way to get you out of your funk, then so be it.”

Adam turned and there was Kris, holding out a martini, looking fabulous in blue jeans and a crisp white shirt. Adam took the drink, dumbfounded. Kris clinked their glasses together in a silent toast.

Once Adam recovered from the shock of seeing Kris before him, they hugged and fell back into the comfort of old friendship. Kris confessed the ‘party’ had been a charade to surprise him; he had been really worried about Adam and decided he needed to do something monumental.

They sat and talked and laughed and cried and laughed again, nearly ignoring the fantastic meal prepared for them. They did, however, really enjoy dessert - ice cream cones - strawberry for Adam and chocolate for Kris. The boys kicked off their sandals, rolled up their pant legs and sat on the edge of the pool, dipping their feet in the cool water.

They had fallen into that type of silence best friends have, where they’re comfortable and content saying nothing. They played footsie in the water and looked at each other, equally goofy smiles on their faces. Sometimes Adam leaned in and bumped his shoulder with Kris’.
The looks Kris returned started changing. His brown eyes grew smoky and his smile softened. Their playful antics in the water changed as well. Instead of knocking each other’s feet around, Kris started slowly rubbing his foot up Adam’s instep. Adam didn’t seem to mind one bit.

Adam’s gaze caught Kris’ and neither man broke the hold. Their ice cream started melting from the heat. Adam switched the cone to the other hand and started to lick the melted cream.

“Allow me.”

Kris took Adam’s hand and slowly licked away the strawberry. Adam bit his bottom lip, mesmerized by the tongue traveling up and down his hand. Shivers danced up his arm. Kris put Adam’s fingers in his mouth and gently sucked them clean. Adam realized he’d stopped breathing.

“Kr…Kris,” Adam started, his voice shaky. “Why are you doing this?”

“The ice cream…”

“No, not the ice cream. I mean this, all of this. You could have talked me down on the phone or the web cam. Why did you travel all this way?”

Still holding Adam’s hand, Kris tossed his cone in the pool, reached out for Adam’s and did the same. Kris placed his free hand on Adam’s chest, the heat from their bodies rivaling the night air. “I think it’s time this bromance turned into romance.”

Adam laid his hand on Kris’s thigh as the hand on his chest slowly moved up to his neck. Kris’ thumb stroked Adam’s throat. “Has any man told you what a gift you are?” Kris’ voice was low, full of awe. His hand moved up to Adam’s jaw, his thumb now dancing over the trembling man’s lower lip. Adam closed his eyes and pressed into his touch “Has any man told you that you are beautiful,”; Kris leaned in and kissed Adam’s temple, “stunning”; Adam’s closed eyes, “intoxicating”, Adam’s nose, “magical” - he moved his thumb and achingly touched his lips to Adam’s, breathing into his mouth, “only his?”

The first kiss enveloped Adam’s bottom lip, the second his top lip and then Adam melted into the slow seduction, into the mingling of strawberry and chocolate. Tentatively, Adam kissed him back, afraid Kris would pull back if he showed how eager he was. Hands caressed shoulders, chests, backs, and thighs. The world faded away and these two young men, these best of friends, lost themselves in the sheer joy of each other.

“I didn’t know you had this in you,” Adam was finally able to say when they allowed themselves to breathe.

“That’s what all my casual dating was for.”

Adam was stunned, then humbled when Kris continued. “I needed to know if this was the direction I really wanted to go. I didn’t want to offer myself to you until I was sure I could offer you…everything. The last thing I would ever do is hurt you Adam.” Kris pressed his forehead to Adam’s. “This is what I’ve wanted, what I’ve needed since the moment I laid eyes on you. I held back because I didn’t want to start something I couldn’t finish. I know now - this is what I want. I want you.”

Kris’ hand buried itself in Adam’s hair, pulling him in. The kissing intensified, became all consuming. It became so consuming they forgot where they were and as one, they tumbled into the pool.

You would think that would damper their passion. It seemed to intensify instead, seeing each other wet, their clothes clinging to their bodies, becoming transparent. Taking Adam’s hand, Kris pulled him over to the stairs and out. They were breathing heavy, a little having to do with the water, most of it having to do with each other.

There was a cabana nearby, through a small grove of trees. Kris led the way. Adam didn’t resist. Kris opened the door, revealing his second surprise. Adam peered in to the candlelit room. A large bed draped in rich satin sheets and speckled with red and white rose petals was laid out before them.

For the first time all night, Kris seemed unsure about his next move.

“I know the rose petals are a cliché but …”

Adam’s lips cut him off. This kiss was warm and understanding and loving. “It’s always been you. I tried to replace you in my life but there is no one like you Kris. I didn’t think I stood a chance. I’ll suffer every cliché in the book if it means you’ll have me.”

Kris slowly pulled Adam into the cabana and shut the door.

They lay quietly in the bed, Kris on his back with a pillow tucked under his head, Adam on his stomach between Kris’ legs, head resting on Kris’ stomach. It was more than they had every imagined. They had waited so long to be together.

Adam started to get up.

“Where are you going?”

“Nowhere, just shifting over. I’m bigger than you…and heavier.”

Kris placed his hands on Adam’s shoulders and pushed him back down until Adam’s head rested on his stomach once more. Kris petted Adam’s head.

♫ “You ain’t heavy…you’re my lover.”♫

Silence and then they both cracked up. “You are full of cliché’s aren’t you?”

“I’m full of something…” Kris leaned over, reaching beside the bed. Adam plucked crushed rose petal from Kris’ sweaty back.

“Hey, where are you going.”

“Shush, time for surprise number three.”

Adam sat up on the bed, the sheet draped over his hips and thighs. He did love surprises, especially the type Kris like to give.

Kris handed his lover a small box, a jewelry box. Adam slowly released the silk ribbon. Inside was a necklace, a medallion of sterling silver with a shooting star embossed on it.

“Oh babe, it’s beautiful.”

Kris took the necklace out of the box and unlatched it, lifting it over Adam’s head and doing it up, finishing with a kiss to the back of the neck.

“You’re the star of my life, Lambert.”

The cuddled together, Kris against Adam’s back, arms holding him tight. Adam heard Kris’ breathing slow and knew he’d fallen asleep. Adam wanted to sleep too but he wanted to look at his gift - his second gift. Kris was his first.

Adam wiped a happy tear from his eye. His fingers ran over the design, tracing it into his memory. He felt something engraved on the back. Turning it over, he read the inscription.

As he drifted off into contented dreams full of Kris Allen, the sentiment on the necklace danced through his head
