The morning meeting started bright and early, as it did every day. All of the center’s therapists would meet in the dining room before breakfast for a general meeting and then fifteen minutes later they’d break off into two groups with their supervisors to discuss their individual cases in more detail.
Kris sat in his chair, sipping his coffee and finishing his bagel. While his supervisor Lani talked to his co-worker Cale, Kris looked out the window at the beautiful spring day. The sky was a brilliant blue with a few streaks of clouds, the green hills and shady woods surrounding them called out for a stroll and the fountains in the garden sparkled in the sunlight. It made for a relaxing work environment but it also saddened the man that the people who came here for help couldn’t enjoy it the same way he could.
“Kris?”
Tearing his eyes away from the view, he turned his attention to the smiling woman behind the desk. Popping the last of his breakfast in his mouth and wiping his fingers on his jeans, he took the file she was holding out to him.
“Your new student arrives this afternoon.”
Each therapist was assigned one student at a time so they could give them their undivided attention and Kris had said goodbye to his last student two days ago. He had worked at only one rehab center before he came here and the differences were remarkable. That wasn’t to say his previous job wasn’t fulfilling, but it was a government run facility with too many students and not enough staff. Kris had been constantly weighed down with paperwork and he’d struggled with their limited resources; when he saw a posting for the privately owned Jones-Walowitz Center for the Blind, he took a chance, applied, and got hired. They were located in a picturesque valley in Northern California and could accommodate ten guests at a time. Their students demanded privacy for various reasons, which meant most of them were wealthy or well known.
Kris looked at the name on the file: LAMBERT, ADAM MITCHEL
“You probably heard his story on the news. About seven months ago, he was on set shooting a music video when a light fixture fell off some scaffolding and hit him on the head. He was in a coma for a week and when he woke up, he couldn’t see.”
Adam Lambert was a famous singer and actor; Kris couldn’t recall reading anything but nice things about him in the press. While he was in the hospital that first week, fans had camped out, holding vigil. The story was covered around the world and his family released messages of thanks for the love and support they’d received. The entertainment industry and his Glamberts had rejoiced when he’d woken up and then word came he’d lost his sight. After that, the singer disappeared. Speculation ran wild and eventually his family and management had released one last statement, asking for privacy and prayers as he continued to recover.
Kris opened the file and read it. The accident had resulted in a skull fracture and neck injuries. According to the report before him, Adam had recovered completely from those injuries with the only lingering issue being his blindness. Apparently four months ago, he’d undergone surgery to restore his sight and it failed. Since then, he’d been seeing a psychiatrist for depression.
There was one notation that stood out and in Kris’ experience it always made his job a little harder.
“Coming here for rehab wasn’t his idea.”
“No. Adam’s mother Leila was made his legal guardian so she could manage his financial affairs while he recovered. She moved into his house and apparently started managing his life as well, doing nearly everything for him. She would try to get him to do things on his own and when he faltered, instead of letting him try again, she took over. It was Adam’s father Eber who realized this was a bad situation for their son and he convinced Leila to bring him to us.”
“I imagine it didn’t go over well with Adam.”
“I don’t know but my guess is he just went along with his mother.” Lani leaned forward, declaring, “He’s lost Kris and we need to show him there is light in the darkness. For the first week at least, I’d like you stay overnight until he gets use to the place.”
“Of course. I’ll just run home and pack a bag.”
“Fine, fine. Adam and Leila will be arriving around 1pm. We’ll see you then.”
