I keep meaning to get Zimbardo's book. Michael Shermer did a very interesting interview with him last year for Skeptic Magazine's podcast.

The US had a good reason for refusing to sign the treaty to join the International Criminal Court. It didn't look like a good reason at the time, Bill Clinton wasn't about to start committing blatant war crimes, but some diplomats must have known that the next president was going to.

What's really appalling about all this in particular, as far as I'm concerned at any rate, is that these crimes are committed by the world's superpower with such impunity. The arrogance and ignorance of this behaviour tells us all we need to know about the nature of power. A complete lack of decency, compassion, self-criticism...
But all those things are entirely in nature with the people concerned. In his time as Governor of Texas, Bush failed to commute a single death sentence. In my view, it's also the fault of the millions of Americans who voted for Bush and co and support what he is doing.
