I find what the article mentions about Ben's continuing TV roles (like Sherlock) to be ... nerve-wracking. All we can do, I suppose, is trust that he'll continue to embrace variety with regards to his work.
Gah - I hope he'll make an exception for Sherlock, much as I'd love to see him in more and bigger roles in film!
Oh and the interviewer apparently hasn't heard the latest rumour about Benedict's role in Star Trek, if he still writes *that* character's name as if it was a certainty (which it never was anyway, as there was no official announcement so far).
I think Benedict would jump on whatever juicy opportunity was handed to him, whether it a TV role or a Movie. Right now, movies just sound more appealing to him :)
The Sherlock writers love their cliffhangers. As long as we get another one for s3, we will get a s4 ;)
I wouldn't worry about it too hard, it's not a direct quote from Benedict about not wanting to do more TV ever, it's mostly the journalist making a prediction. If anything I got the implication from it that Benedict just didn't want another big TV franchise, probably because he's already got one. Ben was saying only a couple of months ago that he will always want to do Sherlock so I don't think the future of the show is in great jeapoardy yet. Like all actors though, regardless of his stated intention, he'll ultimately go where the best scripts lead him and that could genuinely be anywhere.
He says in the same breath he wants to do action movies and stoner comedies which I guess is fair enough to ring the changes and all, but ultimately I still think there's been better quality drama on TV lately than there has been in film. If he can successfully navigate switching between mediums he'll get more quality and more variety of work than if he just sticks to films and I would assume he probably knows that.
All the greatest actors are willing to play any role anywhere if it gives them, to use an English expression I particularly like, something to get their teeth into.
Unfortunately for us readers also reporters often get things wrong. I just read an interview with John Barrowman which says he divides his time between London and Wales because that's where Torchwood is filmed, and that he will move to Boston if a TV pilot he filmed is picked up when I read ages ago that it hadn't been.
Besides, it's only a short while ago I read that Ben would like to play Hamlet and I presume that would be on stage.
I also found the stuff about not being able to afford to do theatre or TV quite depressing, but also confusing; he has elsewhere recently talked about wanting to do Sherlock for the foreseeable future (although to be fair he does say that he can't afford 'another' big TV gig, so maybe he means 'on top of Sherlock').
And yes, he has been talking about wanting to do Hamlet in the next couple of years. Then again, a little while ago Hamlet came up in an interview and he said he felt that the role was over-subscribed, what with David Tennant, Rory Kinnear etc doing it recently, and that he was more interested in Richard II.
So perhaps he just says whatever comes into his head at the time and ends up, over a period of weeks or months, contradicting himself. :-) I really hope he hasn't given up on theatre for good though. For my money, great as he is on screen he is even better on stage.
Yes, agree with you. I acted as a child and was in several German movies so I have a vague idea of what constitutes great acting and I feel it would be a great pity if Ben restricted himself to movies only.
I'm married to someone who says what comes into his head at the time---
