These all come from the Daily Mail. I'm only posting the links here- I hope that's OK- as it's stupid o'clock right now and I should be in bed.

Gary Oldman on playing George Smiley: "Britain has always had spies- I think we spy very well."

John le Carré: "In my day, MI6 stank of wartime nostalgia." Quite a lot of the terminology and whatnot is ( Read more... )

Spoilerish too because this reveals something of the character which I did not know.

Actually, he reveals something about the character which is a huge change from the book.

OMG--HUGE change! Wonder why they did that??

I'm not sure. Surely they must cover the Haydon-Prideaux relationship so what would this be adding to the story? Broken, guilt-ridden Guillam filling his life with casual sex makes sense changing his orientation seems unnecessary in such a short film.

Seems Benedict was discussing backstory with the author, so, perhaps this orientation will not be overt at all, I'll wait and see.

Interesting - I hadn't heard about that before either.

And how gorgeous is that picture of Benedict?!

Quite. The terminology used is fantastic, it's like journalism slang. Hopefully it doesn't die out. I laughed quite hard when I read "ferrets"- had the sudden image of a ferret in jeans and a T shirt rooting around under a desk going, "Nah, mate, THIS is your problem..." (probably why the tech guys were known as ferrets in the first place?)

Or maybe because they helped ferret out information by providing various technical means to spy on people? In any case, yes, it's interesting to read about the terminology. :)

*facepalm* Fuck. Yes. It even says it in the article somewhere, doesn't it, le Carre's one? I reckon my image is funnier though. :P I am a journalist and shall now refer to myself and my kind as ferrets! I think the terminology's by turns hilarious and brilliant.

I keep running into spoilers these last few days, so that's it, I'm reading the book now. I didn't want to, and I don't even like stories about the Cold War, but this one is very interesting, this far. And it's very easy to see Benedict as Peter Guillam, he seems quite an obvious choice.

BTW, in the picture of Mark Strong (in le Carré's interview) there's some writing on the wall in Hungarian. LOL. :) (If anyone's wondering, it's some kind of Socialistic slogan about building the railway, but its beginning is obscured.)

I Love Benedict, but... dessaureaux July 14 2011, 01:39:23 UTC
I’m going to have to really suspend disbelief when I watch Benedict in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. While I’m no expert on the shadowy world of espionage, I’ve read enough about it to know that agents are chosen partly for their inconspicuous facial features--
and a blond, gorgeous Benedict is anything but inconspicuous. At the very least, he probably wouldn’t be the head of a section whose job it is to assassinate people as unobtrusively as possible! Anyone who hasn’t seen the Tinker Tailor miniseries really should see it before they see the movie. And while you’re at it, look for the miniseries “The Sandbaggers” which is all about Guillam's unit, the scalphunters. Perhaps I'm being presumptuous, but it seems that Roy Marsden, who plays the head of scalphunters, is far more believable than the Guillam character that Benedict portrays in the trailer. Having said all of this, I still plan to see the movie because, well, I love Benedict!
