Oh poor Charlie... I'm sorry you have to get rid of him. I hope you have good luck in finding him a home.

Mega-bummer. My mom and I were in a simlar situation awhile ago with our black lab Rosie. My dad hates pets and forced us to get rid of her when she was about 7 or so. My mom, in tears, was all ready to take her to the humane society when I stopped her and suggested offering her to our next-door neighbor Steve. (He's the smiley guy in all the USPS ads you see everywhere.) Steve was more than happy to take her because he had had a black lab that had gotten hit by a car and missed having a dog. So now, 10 or so years later, Rosie still lives right across the lawn and we can go play with her and take her for walks anytime we want.

So my advice would be to check around the nieghborhood and see if anyone would like to have Charlie. Or if Charlie's mild-mannered and likes children, take him for a walk where there are lots of kids and when they come up to pet him tell them that he's looking for a new home.
