Doris Egan of "House," "Smallville," "Reign," on Scripts Making Their Way to Our Screens

This is from Doris Egan's wonderful blog, "Tightrope Walker," here on LJ.  I scream as loud as anyone about the retcon of SPN canon, and a whole lot of other things.  This gives an insider's perspective.

The sections on television writing, continuity, etc. are fascinating.  I urge everyone to read Mr. Continuity and the entry following that one.  ( Read more... )

I think she is telling me what I already suspected. I really think they have limited interest in storyline and continuity and such, they are just seeing how many commercials they can fit in and what will bring in the main demo group next week. Twenty people take out any tiny bit of a thing that is odd, off, or unusual, yet not one of those twenty realized that there was no way Wilson could have been married to his first wife 10 years ago? Not even Wilson?

Not at all surprised by this, but it's still interesting. I often blamed "the writers" for all the things that drove me cray-cray with House [MD], but of course the writers are just cogs in the machine of insanity.

Still, I have to wonder...with all those people who "bump" on things that seem off, or quirky, or unusual, how did House *driving his car into Cuddy's living room, and all the violence-against-women connotations that go with it* get by?

I'm guessing as the showrunner, David Shore thought it was a great idea, and Hugh Laurie had to also. As well as a great many others. It was clear from their reaction afterwards that they were astonished by how upset everybody--fans, reviewers, etc.--were. Don't forget, the people who made these decisions were all producers or executive producers.

The later creative people who came in didn't seem to understand so much...
