RSL in "Born Yesterday" One Mo' Time

Jun 21, 2011 08:01

My husband has wanted to see "Born Yesterday" since he came home to find me and flywoman  lying post-coitally in my living room having been exposed to the sexy awesomeness that is Robert Sean Leonard.  (To clarify, we didn't have sex with each other!  Although I think we both regretted not kidnapping RSL).  Also he wanted to see the play. I wasn't so sure ( Read more... )

It's a shame the run is ending. It would have been interesting to see it again and compare the two performances.

I saw it after you and Flywoman, and there was flirty build up to the kiss, but then the whole thing was dropped until the end. Was that different this time?

RSL was wonderful when I saw it, enough so that it's hard to believe he could have gotten better...but I believe you.

What did you think of Arianda's performance? She gets a lot of good press, but I'd love to hear from an objective source. It was hard for me to untangle my reactions to the play vs. my reactions to the character vs. my reactions to the actress.

This time around, after the kiss, RSL played the long scenes with Billie as if he was restraining himself, that it was difficult to be with her and be her tutor and not her lover. It really came across, and his reading of the Napoleon speech was like poetry, rather than the declaration it was the first time I saw it. So their scenes had a whole different rhythm that led more naturally to the end.

I thought Nina Arianda was wonderful. Other actresses have tackled the part and they aren't up to it. Judy Holliday gave Billie a real sweetness and soul. Ariana's Billie was harder, loving but not particularly sweet. There was a difference in her performances, but I'd rather discuss it via PM.

The Napoleon reading was hands down my favorite part of the play.

Taking the rest to PMs.

Aw, that was a sweet conversation! You pushed his buttons!! And you got to see him AGAIN! Frankly, I envy you living there in New York! Well, not only because you get to see RSL but because it's New York! I'm such a fan! (I get to visit friends in Brooklyn every few years when I'm solvent)

He, your husband is fun and has great taste in men - and women, of course!

Thank you! Every time House and Cuddy kissed, he would go "EEEEeeew!" He thought it was just wrong.

"I wish you could stay in New York!" I said. He looked straight at me with this huge smile that made my knees go weak and responded, "I wish I could, too!"

*big smile* He'll be back, baby. He'll be back.

"I'm more of a Hilson than ever."

LOL.

I'm a bit envious at you having such an awesome husband! I can imagine mine going to a play with me (he loves theatre) but meeting the actors afterwards is definitely out of the question. Not that I would have an occasion to do so, mind you. And I'm with julefontane: living in NY rocks! [Although practical or cheap, I suspect, it is not. My colleagues at Columbia complain all the time. And you can't move them no matter how much money you offer, LOL.]

NYC is hard to live in when you're broke, the way we are. I'm on disability and my husband is a social worker, so $$$ are few. However, I love it here. It's masochism.
