Awesome analysis, particularly about how inappropriately informed little Ashton was. I'm wondering if the writers wanted to establish how "oversexed" (for lack of a better word) her character was right from the beginning, and let that get in the way of their critical/analytical judgment.

One small quibble about the rail line: it runs on the other bank of the Hudson, and has done so since 1826. That could have been the train George and Orry took upstate-- not plausible, but also not impossible.

The Albany and Schenectady Railroad operated between the two mentioned cities. George and Orry would not have been able to catch that particular train in New York City. Also, there is bus service between New York and West Point now; but no train service. And George and Orry would have been forced to use ferry service or a river boat that would take them up the Hudson River to the Academy.
