I've seen the word "elective" thrown around occasionally... Are we allowed to take any classes that are outside of our departments? If so, what are the options?
What department are you in? Because for Creative Writing, you have two classes: your core class, and your elective. Your (assigned) core class covers all sorts of aspects of creative writing, whereas you choose an elective focusing on a certain area of creative writing that you're interested in. (Two years ago the options were fiction, poetry, play/screenwriting, and memoir.)
And, as kaiikuun said, there are collaborations across departments. In my poetry class we worked with music and painting students, and my final project was a collaboration with someone in film.
Though I'm unsure of what department you speak of, I shall answer with what I know. In the Theatre department you have all of your regular classes and then you have your elective classes, usually held on Fridays or Saturdays, which you have the opportunity to sign up for after you get there. These include: Musical Theatre, Acting for the Camera, Shakespeare workshop and Mask workshop.
what everyone else has said is true, but as far as classes from other departments that are open to you there may be some... i was in animation last year and there is a screening almost everyday after lunch for us in the bijou that sometimes other deprtments sat in on, we also had saturday life drawing classes that were open to anybody, and we were allowed to go to a few of the vis arts saturday drawing classes... although i never did. also theatre kids have a morning tai-chi workout that i belive was open to anyone... who wanted to wake up that early. you will be plenty busy with your own work load, but if you ever find yourself with free time, just pick up the morning newsletter in the cafeteria, it tells you everything that os going on that day and will mention if it is open to other departments.
I guess my major is Film/Video, which was exactly covered, but I think I get the general gist (plus eloquentice said that there are collabs between departments too)
Awesome! I can randomly sit in on some classes, that sounds like fun ^^
