He would check again and possibly talk to Kirk. He already knew he was here, that he was alive. But now he needed to see the state of his mind--to know whether all of his Captain had come back

Sitting at his desk, staring blankly into a data pad, Bones heard the scratching at the door. He slid his finger across the console that would open the door, but didn't see anyone standing there.
From his seated position he missed the small black creature slide into the room.
At this point, so much crazy shit had happened that the logistics of how and why a cat was in his sickbay didn't matter. All he knew what that he wasn't in the mood for a cat on his lap, as he gently pushed it off, wincing as the claws dug into his legs as it slid to the floor.
Bones stared back, determined not to let this creature beat him in a glaring contest. They sat and eyed each other for a solid minute before the foolishness of the situation dawned on him.
"I'm sorry," he sighed to the cat, reaching out and touching his head, a little stroke behind the ear. "You caught me at a bad time."
"I know," he nodded, scritching the ear a little harder before moving the cat to his lap and giving it a long stroke as he leaned back in his chair. "Guess I'm not completely surprised, after what I saw in the hobgobblin's head. Still, did not want to see that," he finished, a bitter tone in his voice. "My own fault, I agreed to it, can't bitch about it now... anyway," he looked into the cat's face, "who do you belong to?"
Bones checked for a collar, ran his scanner over the cat, no identifying microchip tags. "Can't imagine someone isn't looking for you..." He remembered seeing a cat with one of the actors - maybe it belonged to him.
Against his will Bones cracked a smile as the cat rubbed his face. "Aren't you a friendly thing," he said softly, rubbing under the cat's chin. Most cats he'd remembered had been skittish things, loners with hard eyes. This one was downright sweet.
A vibration at his side let Bones know that Kirk's bed monitor settings were adjusted again, presumably by Spock leaving. "Guess its safe to go in there now," he said, putting the cat on his desk. "Lemme get you something to snack on before I get out of here," he said, leaving the room and coming back with a saucer with some tuna on it.
"Enjoy, okay?" he added, rubbing behind the ear once more, "and thanks for listening." Wondering when he turned into such a sucker, Bones grabbed a book and headed off to Kirk's biobed.
