Kaile woke up on the second ring, reaching for her phone on autopilot and flicking it open halfway through the third ring.

Not dispatch.

Of course not, because she wasn't on call tonight. She blinked at her phone, the rust of adrenaline ebbing away, returning when the caller ID filtered through the haze of sleep.

"Lindsay? Hey!"

"I hear you on that. I get more tired of never seeing her, though. I'm asleep when she's awake, and there's still those 18-hour shifts--" Kaile cut off, and maybe she was being over-sensitive, but she got the feeling Lindsay really didn't want to hear this.

"Listen, Linds, I gotta get back to bed. I'll call you?"

"Exactly," Lindsay said, worrying her lip. "Yeah. Yeah, call me. I'll talk to you soon. G'night, Kaile."

She waited for Kaile to hang up before flipping her phone closed and tossing it on the table. Odd, wasn't it, that she missed Kaile more than she missed Mac? Mac, who she'd thought she was in love with.

Sighing, she glanced at her watch and cursed Danny for working nights. If he'd been here, she probably wouldn't have even called her.
