The Unicorn and the Wasp - Episode Review

Hands down, best episode of the series so far.

It was fun, and entertaining - what Doctor Who should be, instead of this angst-fest it so often is.

LOVED: The cyanide poisoning scene was possibly the funniest scene in Who so far. ‘Nuff said. There is no need for explanation.

DIDN’T LOVE SO MUCH: The repeated “We’re not a couple.” gag, but even that ( Read more... )

Sadly, yes, Eurovision is pre-empting DW next week so 2 weeks until we get "Silence in the Library". But there will be a super-duper mid-series trailer on BBC to keep us going for the next week.

I won't get to see this week's till Monday but you've got me excited now. :)

Bloody Eurovision. Seriously though, who actually watches it?

So you haven't actually seen "the Unicorn..." yet? Do you not mind reading spoilers?

It is really good though, a nice reprieve from the usual depressing angst. :)

I meant to let you know I was here via marriedonmars, btw. Since you probably had no idea who I am!

I don't mind reading spoilers at all. If anything, I live for them. I've been addicted to the set report threads on DrWhoForum for months. I love knowing tidbits and then seeing how it all comes together. Sad, but true. :) I'm away from home with so no new Who for me till Monday so knowing a little bit, esp if people liked it or not tends to make things a little less painful for me.

Thanks. I don't mind new people commenting. It's all good. :)

I know what you mean, I can never resist spoilers. I am so weak :) I suppose it's better knowing what to expect, no disappointments. Although, reading other reviews, there are very diverse opinions and I think it's all down to how seriously you take it.

I come back after an episode, absolutely loving it, then I read other people’s reviews on LJ, who always find something to criticise about it, dampening my spirits.

Oh FFS, how much truth thou speakest there - I really enjoy an ep, and then I come online and my happy mood is squished by nay-sayers - to the point where I dread visiting LJs afterwards.

But this ep - well, some things didn't work for me, but this is without doubt my favourite ep of the series so far overall. :¬)

Totally agree. Honestly, why is everyone so cynical? I know the point of a review is to say wat you liked and didn't like about it, but I reckons some people take it far too seriously.

OTOH, just out of interest, what didn't you like about it? If I like an episode I tend to ignore the bits that didn't make sense etc. It'd be nice to hear what someone who actually likes the ep thinks was wrong with it, as opposed to someone who absolutely hates it. :)

Personally, I thought it was the weakest this year so far, but that's because I've never cared for farce, and this episode is a pastiche of a typical farce. Just as an example, that scene where Donna, mouth slack, keeps saying 'So s/he's the murderer!' really got on my nerves. To me, instead of being funny it just made Donna look stupidly irritating.

I wouldn't say I dislike it (unlike last year, I haven't disliked any this year so far), but if I were to rank this season in order of preference this episode would be bottom.

Oh, and the continuity announcer did say, over the final credits, that there's no DW next week.

Each to their own, I suppose. This episode was certainly not one of the most meaningful or deep episodes in the series, but in my opinion, it was a nice, light-hearted break from the usual angst.

It really irritates me that we lose out on DW for the ESC again No one watches it anyway.

I used to love the Eurovision, when I lived in Europe! Terry Wogan is hilarious. Still no reason to take DW off just because of it, though :(

And, yes, each to their own; as I said, my dislike of farce is very much a personal thing. I do enjoy humour, but it's that particular type of very British humour (eg Fawlty Towers) that's never done anything at all for me :(

Yeah, the only thing I like about Eurovision is Terry Wogan. But apart from that I can't stand it, I think it's something to do with the fact that we never win. :o)

I don't mind farce, as long as it's not too ridiculous, and I know Fawltey Towers often got so ridiculous it was practically unwatchable (although, saying that, I still adore it - I love Basil/John Cleese's sarcasm)

To be honest, it doesn't really irritate me that much. I think it's because i read so many ep reviews where people complain about it that I get influenced. I have no strenght of character :\

It was definitely the best scene ever, and possibly funnier than the window/mime scen in PiC.

Agatha Christie was marvellous, and I love just how... murder mystery spoof it was XD I love murder mysteries too, and as it was Doctor Who themed... so silly, but very fun.

My thoughts exactly :D

Also, Eurovision, I hate going for two weeks without DW, particularly before Steven Moffat's episodes, and particularly for something as boring as Eurovision.
