On the topic of food . . .

So, for the past few weeks, I've been involved in an on-and-off discussion about groceries, food, classism and other topics on a blog elsewhere. One of the claims that comes up over and over on that blog has been that you might as well go out to dinner, because making dinner for 4 costs $25-$30 in groceries. My mind boggles. guh. Even if you get relatively convenient food, you can get a whole chicken to roast for under five dollars, a bag of salad for 3, two of those steam in bag veggies for 2 dollars each, then a loaf of french bread for 1.50.

Around here, the standard roaster chickens seem to run about $6, but still, that plus sides aren't going to run you $25. I do it easy and buy the gigantic bags of boneless breasts, which cost $16 and last me about 2 months. (Tho, I will say I am lucky here: I and the kid still split a chicken breast. I know I won't be able to continue that at some point.)

I have a largish pork rib roast in the fridge that's going to be stuck in the crock and turn into some type of stew later this week, and it was *checks* $4.60.

I think that I buy a decent (and kind of expensive) amount of convenience and specialty foods and sometimes even feel guilty over that, but I still can't get myself to the level of the people who were claiming $25/night for home cooked meals. I know the high-end cuts of steak can run that much for 2, crabs, and lobster tails, but that's about all I can think of.

People are calling you a liar? I'd think they'd be asking you how you make meals significantly cheaper than they can ( ... )
