Angel with a Bicycle - Ghost Hunt Short Story Translation

Dec 13, 2015 17:01

Once again I've translated another one of the Ghost Hunt short stories by Fuyumi Ono! I believe she wrote this one under a pseudonym in the doujinshi Principia along with The System of the Unexplained PhenomenaAnyway, this story takes place when Naru is still a child, and is about his meeting with the man who will teach him magic tricks. I can't help but laugh at the Bicycle deck!! I used to play card games (solitaire, something like mahjong, and so on) back when I was at my home country. I encountered the same brand of cards long ago too, but didn't really look closely at it to see the angel riding a bicycle. XD

Vianney is such a great person! I think it's really nice that Naru met him in his formative years, and he grew up well! 😭 I could see how much he influenced Naru. Also, I can't help but remember Naru showing Mai his ventriloquism skills and hand tricks. 😂

It's so cute to see Naru unsure of himself. He grew up to be the opposite! Not completely, but well enough. ☺️

Research at the time the short story was based has probably a lot of questionable aspects as compared to now, so Vianney is a very important person for Naru to see early on what must be changed in going through research about ESP and PK. 😊

Ahaha yeah, when I looked up images of the Bicycle playing cards, I was like "Hey, I've seen those before!!" XD And I never noticed the angel before either!

It's really fun rewatching the After School Hexer case after reading this story, especially for that scene with Mai. XD I can't help but wonder if Vianney ever told him these tricks could be used to woo girls...

I know, right? He used to be so timid! Then Vianney starts lavishing him with constant praise and attention and two years later, he's sassy as fuck. I think Vianney created a monster. XD

And yeah, SPR at this point in time was...really not scientific. It's very easy to see how Naru would become disillusioned after he's started learning about tricks. He was already skeptical from the start, but at least at this age, he still has some wide-eyed innocence and respect for elders. ^^;

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. It's been so long since I've read anything new from Ghost Hunt. It was like a drink of fresh clear water. I hope you don't mind if I follow where ever your tags take me. I want more. LOL

Reading this makes me so happy! It's only been rather recent that I learned about all of these side stories and i can't wait to read all of them! Also, it always makes me a little bit happy when the game Bridge is mentioned in stories. It's mostly played by older generations, but I grew up playing it with my family so seeing it always makes me happy! :)

Ghost Hunt will always be one of my comfort series, and I'm so grateful for the translations of the short stories! If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by Naru's "bicycle" in your notes? Naru as an "angel" is such a funny concept too (I don't quite grasp the ulterior meaning behind it, I'm afraid - sorry!), but as someone who knows some Japanese, I think your translation is fitting, so thank you again for your time and dedication!
