[Stay occupied, stay occupied. Desperately Winry's been trying to throw herself so far into her work so that she may forget about everything. Normally this isn't hard, but a handful of things have been weighing heavily on her lately. Between Ed's announcement about Pride, Donatello's odd behavior, and her attempts to ignore the war, this girl has ( Read more... )

[Sokka is often one of the first ones in the smithy, depending on the day. This is thanks mostly to Derek's love of ungodly hours for training. He doesn't immediately notice Winry as he walks in, doing his morning preparations of clearing his workspace and eating the breakfast he brought along with him. However he eventually will notice Winry over their snoozing up on the couch he was planning to eat his breakfast on. Oh Winry, Winry- bandages?

Well, he doesn't want to wake her up, since he has no idea how long she's been there. After considering it for a moment, he goes to grab a blanket. Unfortunately the smithy doesn't have much in the way of blankets... but that cloth he keeps under the knife display would work. Still... that's a lot of knives. He tugs on that cloth a little bit, but it doesn't really budge. So... he tries a little harder. ClinkOkay, maybe that won't work. He could move the knives. He starts to, but they make a racket from all the clanging. Okay, okay. He can just sweep the cloth out without moving anything! He's ( ... )

[Sokka is going to be showing off some amazing dodging skills as some of those knives manages to come at him. He manages to avoid them and sighs in relief that he's fine. It was a little loud, but it wasn't that loud. After all, that table only had the knives.

... and wait. Didn't it also have...]

When the one doing the experiments stops caring about the well-being of his subjects and cares only for the results no matter how many lives are lost.

Even if those lives were volunteered?

Even then. It is one thing to do a risky experiment and actually care about the life of your subject, it is another to think of their life as only data. That to me is the line.

I understand. [At least she thinks she does. There's a bit of silence because she's unsure if she has more to say. Winry wasn't guilty of that kind of thing. Right? She'd never thought of her patients as just money, or disposable subjects. Had she? No...]

Have you, um. Had experience with this kind of thing?

When it turns the 'subject' into a non-entity in the eyes of the researcher.

So... when the scientist looks at the person as more of a bunch of spare parts, than an actual person?

derek_bliss June 23 2010, 03:45:26 UTC
Yeah. That, and when they quit checking in with the person to make sure they're doing all right with what's going on. Or quit being willing to stop it if it's going too far.

The person should matter more than the experiment.

I see. Thank you, Derek. I hope that this isn't something you've had to deal with before.

[After a considerable length of dead air-] It is not an easy line to draw.

I guess not. I f there were only some kind of... or just-

Rules you know?

Who would make those rules? Those doing the experiments? Those experimented on? Those the experiments benefit? Another party?

There is rarely a simple answer.

So it was a stupid question to ask?

[With his brothers returned from the Malnosso, Raph's taken to wandering again, and with that comes the incessant racing of his mind. By the time he reaches the smithy, he's come to a decision: It's been two weeks since he's set foot in the place, and he's tired of dealing with people's shit.

It's late, and he expects the place to be empty so he can pack up quickly and be on his way. But the light is on, and he can hear Winry's voice from inside.

He hesitates a beat, stomach twisting and weighing his options. But in the end, he decides to get the hell over himself, taking a deep breath and marching with shoulders squared into the smithy.

He makes for his workbench and starts taking inventory of what he wants to keep. The other stuff he'll leave behind.]

[Upon hearing Raph shuffle through his stuff her wings twitch. She wanted to get up immediately, to march right over there and have him explain himself, to get into a heated argument that would let her forget the heavy discussion she was having on the journal. However she doesn't. Instead Winry stays seated to finish her conversation.]

[Raph sifts through his stuff, finding it's mostly crap he doesn't have any use for. He's taken most of the shuriken already, so he pockets a file or two in his belt to work on the unfinished ones at home. There's no reason to work on them here.

As he does this, he listens to Winry's conversation, and the talk of experiments only makes his exhaustion more apparent.]

What're you doin' here so late?

[Winry closes her journal, and turns to face him.] Just some work I wanted to finish.

[She gets up from her work bench. Carefully the mechanic scoops up a few tools she was using, and drops them in a small box on her desk.] You?
