very cool picture, especially from the 20's, but you -can- see the cutoff line just under the "floating" guy (and the edge on the right doesn't match either).
it's anyones guess as to what is cut off of the upper picture, or what his orientation to the ground was, but his clothing gives away alot. my guess is that in the upper picture, he was standing on the leg you can't see, and leaning back, visible leg hanging loose, holding himself upright with the arm you can almost see, with the visible arm tight to his side.
those light spots are a bit too conveniently placed (done either to the negative or the print pre-development) and the background is purposefully mottled so it's easier to match and blend.
double exposure is simply exposing part of the frame, and then exposing the other part later. i've had similar pictures when my camera failed to advance the film all the way to the next frame.

You picked a good time to display this photo, as Saturday (Sept 13) was the 96th anniversary of Dad's (AKA Grampa Tom's) birth. And who knows where he is now? Maybe floating just over your computer!
