I have had it up to HEERREEE (you can't see, but my hand is WAY above my head.) with mainstream parenting these days. I had something like your last paragraph happen yesterday. Amelia was playing IN OUR OWN BACK YARD, on our swing set. Our yard isn't fenced, but we live on the inside of a circle, so our yard just backs up to all the other yards on the circle. And it's a quiet, safe neighborhood ( ... )

Brandi, I posted a comment before I read yours, and I had someone say something about my kids playing in my yard too--no yelling or anything, but still. GRRRR!

I hate that we have to live in fear of CPS. I was at a bundles for babies meeting yesterday and was told that if my child had too many cavities the dental office is required to report you to CPS for neglect/abuse--until the child is of the age of 18!!! So if my teenager doesn't brush his/her teeth, I can be turned in for abuse. What the crap. We live in a fairly rural location with a huge fenced yard, and I let the kids play out there, and one of my neighbors knocked on my door and asked if I knew they were out there by themselves. Do they think I don't check on them? Grrrr. Just saying I understand.

I place 80% of the blame on the media. They make it sound like the world is so horrible and so dangerous. Stupid fear mongers. Don't people realize that children are protected now more than ever? Our country had laws against ANIMAL abuse before anyone did anything about CHILD abuse. I think we have come a long way, and unfortunately the momentum has taken us too far.
I just saw a commercial about an adult vaccine for pertussis. Have you seen it? It shows a lady with a coughing weezing baby and says that babies get pertussis from adults so we should get vaccinated. Umm- how many babies actually contract pertussis? How did anyone's baby survive before this new vaccine?? Ridiculous- like the H1N1 flu shot- people make money from our fears. Stupid drug companies...

I love that word. Completely describes that type of person. Back when I was trying to be the best mom I could be and reading all the forums and books and articles, I was amazed at the competitiveness of moms. You are only a good mom if you birthed your child naturally, with no drugs, breastfed 100% (esp if you had mastitis that gives you bonus), co-sleep, breastfeed until they are two, no spankings, and all that crap ( ... )

Ugh--the whole "my way is right and your way is wrong" attitude toward parenting makes me insane. Why can't people just accept that *most* of us are making the choices that work best for us and our children as individuals? No single approach is right for every kid and every family ( ... )
