So...I'm pretty sure my building was on fire. This happened last week and I just thought it was those darn smokers again. But tonight around 10pm my apartment started to smell like charcoal, then if filled with smoke. I made sure to check all my appliances, nope, my apartment was not on fire. It smelled as if someone had a hibachi in their living ( Read more... )

Yikes! That's scary--especially when there are little kids at home.

The fire part is scary, but to envision a Japanese fire fighter tiptoing through the house is hilarious.

When we lived in Germany we had some BRILLIANT neighbors who thought it would be a good idea to throw the still red-hot coals from their barbecue grill into the dumpster. It took the fire department nearly two hours to put it out (because apparently some other brilliant neighbors thought it would be O.K. to throw away seriously combustible items, like paint thinner).

The whole neighborhood smelled horrible (imagine all those burned plastic trash bags) for a few days.

The fire department had to come again (and the whole building had to be evacuated) when the SAME neighbors' three year old got a hold of a lighter and set his bedroom on fire. The parents didn't even know. Another neighbor saw the smoke pouring out of the bedroom window and ran in to get people out of the building.

I think I would've secretly video taped the Japanese fireman sneaking around your apartment - how cute and funny! Hope your neighbors think twice about sleeping while they cook - if they're that tired maybe they should try some Chef Boyardee. Would you like me to send you a few cans? You can give it to them in a basket as a nice neighborly gift. ; )
