glad to hear that you are loving your job - there is nothing better in the world than enjoying what you do for most of your day. my mom always said "if you love your job then you will never have to work a day in your life".
in sask. there wasn't agriculture before white people came. in the east apparently there was some before it was settled (they grew maize and beans), but their agriculture was nomadic and they would move around a lot to give the land time to rest and rejuvinate (seems like a good idea, hey?). but obviously that's not really an option with a reserve. the First Nations people in the west were pretty much just hunter-gatherers. the first nations people i've talked to and the meetings i've attended show that the FN people here don't necessarily want to farm just like white farmers. they have other concerns like biodiversity and the ability to hunt. hunting is a big part of their culture and livelihood, but the reality is that their young people don't have jobs, they have land and more is coming, and the situation on the rez is less than ideal. does that clear it up a bit? i'm, by no means, an expert, but i'm learning a lot as i go.
