I had that at a previous place of ungainful employment. They let me spend stuff on my credit card and then paid it off. That was nifty.
It still wasn't enough to make up for the excessively crap pay.

We hit a similar problem with our shiney new LCD tv a couple of months ago. look on the side, there might be buttons there ...

Ooh, thank you for the tip about the button. My light bulb in the lounge room has blown out (AGAIN) but when I have a way of effectively looking, I will do so. :)

Try pressing the "On" switch. Sometimes located at the wall, sometimes at the base or side of the screen, sometimes on the remote.

If in doubt, try looking up "how to" guides on the internet, calling a friend, hiring an expert installer, or if really stuck, read the manual.

Aha. I was wondering what to do after screaming at the TV and then glaring at it balefully didn't work. Emotional blackmail was next on the list. Then I was thinking of tracking down its immediate family members and 'bringing' them to it, one small, bloodied piece of coloured wire at a time until it saw the error of its ways, but your ideas have some merit too.

SRSLY: I'm assuming I've missed something basic and/or visual. I've had a quick look at the manual and what I've done *should* work.

Samsung have their manuals online (I think I'm remembering correctly -- you were going for the 1080p 32" Samsung LCD, yes?). It's a mouseover menu thing at the top of the page, Support then Downloads then use the silly Flash-based thing to select your model.

A vague guess at the model got me a manual which says it goes into standby as soon as it's plugged in and the wall socket is on. The power button on the TV is the bottom one in a set on the front-right, but if the batteries are in the right way around the remote should also do it. Remote power button is top-left, which is pretty much the usual for Samsung gear.

Anyway, grab the PDF of the manual, you'll have an easier time trying to read it than the dead-tree.

Yeah, this is as far as I've gotten - and I've been reading the printed manual with a magnifier. Press the "POWER" button and nothing happens. I think I've missed something really basic.

Have you ever plugged anything else into that particular wall socket? If not, try something else.

If you have, and the socket is fine, and it's definitely turned on at the wall, I'd say you've got a DOA unit and should call the store to get it replaced.
