This is really excellent so far! I'm really impressed with the detail and the fact that if this were done as an original story and not a fanfiction, I believe it would be just as interesting. You really did a good job with this first part. You also have me really intreagued about what will happen next and about the characters themselves (because while yes we 'know' the characters, AU is so different in that we don't actually know the characters).

I really like how you nail the details. Little things like Lyra's silvery gasps. The way Hughes rolls his shoulder in a way that conveys appology and apathy. Few words that just nail down a very specific mood
