sisterwives “You are disowned, Nicolette, you are no longer welcomed in our house,” Adaleen said firmly before she left with the Juniper Creek police.
“Mama!” Nicki cried out, her voice breaking as the term of endearment choked up in her throat
Her mother didn’t say another word, she just left. Bill had called her the rock, Barb had called her stoic, but in this moment she was neither of those and allowed the hurt to well up to the surface. The tears spilled down her cheeks faster than she had anticipated. Margie felt her heart break for her sister wife and moved forward to hug her. As she expected, Nicki simply pushed her away and covered her tear stained face with her hand. The look on Barb’s face had broken the poor girl. Nicki never wanted to hurt her.
Barb quickly shook the shock of betrayal away, understanding that this wasn’t Nicki’s fault. Nicki loved her family and she never would have put them in harm’s way intentionally. This was Rhonda and Roman’s doing. They were the ones that had caused so much pain and embarrassment for Barbara. Even though Rhonda had played a part in the exposure, Barb still knew she needed to help her escape from Roman and Juniper Creek. Barb moved forward and wrapped Nicki in a tight hug, not allowing the blonde to fight her.
“Let’s go home, Nicki,” she said softly, squeezing those trembling shoulders and led the crying woman out to the car.
Barb took Nicki with her while Margie drove Nicki’s car home.
“Nicki, I’m not mad at you. You aren’t responsible for what your father did,” Barb said calmly as she reached one hand over and gently placed it on Nicki’s knee.
“I can’t believe Papa hurt our family like this, to hurt his own daughter…it’s just so much,” Nicki choked out, letting her hand fall down on top of Barb’s.
“I’m sorry he hurt you, but you have us. Never forget that you have us and we will always be there for you,” Barb assured her.
Nicki gave her a tiny smile through her veil of tears. She wasn’t being rejected, she wasn’t being blamed. She was loved and she would always have this family to depend on, it was the family she made, the family she chose, not the one she had been born into. She was thankful that Bill was still out so she wouldn’t have to explain everything to him right away. Barb parked the car and helped Nicki inside.
Margie gave Nicki a sympathetic smile and sat her down on the couch next to her. Barb sat down on the other side of the second wife, wrapping her in a hug and Margie snuggled into Nicki’s side. Nicki had been raised to think this intimate behavior with other women was wrong, but she couldn’t believe that anymore. She felt so loved when she was with her sister wives and it felt wonderful to know that they loved her.
“We’ll get through this together, Nicki, I promise, we’ll always be there for you,” Margie whispered as she combed her fingers through Nicki’s braid, pulling the soft blonde strands out of the rigid hair do.
“Margie is right, we’ll always be by your side. We love you and you may not have much faith in love, but I have a lot and it’s been said that it can move mountains,” Barb smiled, pressing her lips against Nicki’s forehead.
“I love you all so much,” Nicki whispered.
