Margie glanced over at Nickie as they drove down the empty, dusty highway. Nickie looked so intense, so concentrated on the task in front of her. Her hands gripped the wheel so hard that her knuckles were turning white.

“You need to relax,” Margene told her gently.

Her sunglasses covered her eyes, but Margie knew she had just rolled them.

“I don’t need to relax, I’m just fine,” Nickie retorted and stepped on the gas pedal a little harder.

Margie let out a soft sigh and let her head fall against the seat. She reached her fingers into her purse, feeling around and felt them brush against a small wrapped box.

“I know they forgot your anniversary, but I didn’t. I mean I know that I wasn’t around yet when you first came into the family, but I still remembered so I got you a present,” Margie said softly with a little smile on her face.

Nickie loosened her grip on the wheel and turned her face slightly towards her sister wife.

“You didn’t have to do that, Margene,” Nickie said, her voice wavering slightly because she was touched by Margie’s kindness.

“Oh no, it’s fine. I don’t mind, you’re part of my family,” Margie replied as her smile grew a little bit wider.

“Well thank you Margene, I’ll open it when we stop for gas,” Nickie told her and went back to her driving.

Margie swore she saw a smile tug on the corners of Nickie’s lips. Hopefully she would like her present. The women stopped for gas and Margie presented Nickie with the small box wrapped in the shiny blue paper and tied with a gold ribbon. Nickie carefully removed the ribbon and unwrapped the paper. Nestled inside the white tissue paper was a gold locket on a gold chain.

“Go on, open it up!” Margie encouraged.

Nickie opened the locket up and inside was a picture of her and Bill.

“Thank you very much, Margie,” Nickie told her with a little smile.

It was a very nice gift, very thoughtful. It was nice that to know that someone had remembered.

“I’ll help you put it on,” Margie grinned, picking up the chain and securing it around Nickie’s neck.

Nickie rubbed the locket through her fingers and felt herself soften just a little bit inside. She moved to go pump gas in the car and Margie grabbed her cell phone, hurrying off to call Barb to remind her that she had forgotten Nickie’s anniversary. Nickie might be pissed that she was meddling, but she didn’t care.

“So which one of them forgot first?” Nickie demanded when she walked over and realized what Margie had been doing.

“Oh, you know, Nickie, they both forgot,” Margie pushed out, figuring that would be the best answer.

Nickie just got mad and stormed back to the car. Margie sighed and ran after her. She grabbed Nickie by the shoulders and turned her around. The door of the car was a shield of safety for what Margene did next. She pressed her lips softly against Nickie’s for a few moments.

“Hey, I love you and I remembered your anniversary, that should count for something,” she whispered into her ear, letting her lips brush against Nickie’s soft cheek before she climbed into her side of the car.
