After I voted (almost straight Democrat), I dragged Daughter off to beautiful, scenic Manchester, Michigan to knock on doors and remind people to vote Obama. We were provided a list of doors to knock on and a map by a local campaign office, found a good place to park, and took off walking down the street.
We immediately discovered that the map was to a somewhat larger scale than we had thought. We did our first cluster of houses, and then went back for the car...
Sadly, we got to talk to very few people. Of our 40-or-so houses, 4 people were home. One of them said she'd already voted, one was getting ready to go without our reminder, and two seemed almost hostile to the idea of actually voting. (I don't understand this. Why would someone go out of their way to not vote?)
We met three excessively hostile dogs (one was on a lead that short enough that I could actually get to the front door, but at another house there were two dogs, off leash, loose in the driveway, barking at us across the street...yeah, let's move on), one very polite dog (also off leash, loose in the driveway - I introduced myself, and he followed me up to the door while I put a door hanger on the knob, and then stood there and watched while I left, without making a noise), and several friendly volunteers.
By the time I got back to the office, after a lot of walking followed by a long drive, I could hardly stand up. My blisters have blisters - I should have worn my other shoes. We were thanked for our effort, and reassured that it was okay that we skipped the house with the hostile dogs...and invited to help ourselves at the Volunteer Food table.
There was some kind of tube cake from Zingerman's. I had to. But the other thing I had to...is going to be a user icon as soon as I can make it into one.
I have a cupcake I can believe in.
