017 - Harry Potter and the Dubious Eighteenth Birthday - [Voice/Action]

Jul 31, 2010 00:33

[Words are mumbled as he's trying to sort out his thoughts.] This is the worst possible timing. Everyone's out because of the draft or worried because of the draft. I should probably ask if there's anyone out there who could help me learn how to use that sword I got a couple months ago. But most people who could do it are probably off fighting ( Read more... )

how did he get so old?, eighteen years old!, oh bloody hell, happy birthday derpface, didn't die this time!, exercises in futility, potential happy fun times?

I celebrated mine on the actual day. The weird thing was that when I got here, according to this world's calendar my birthday had just passed.

I wasn't really thinking about mine when I got here. Mine was a long ways away anyhow, but now I'm actually thinking about it. At least in your case, it sort of makes sense.

You got here a while ago, right? When I came here it was only like, two weeks past my birthday. I didn't think much about it though once I saw the wings.

...is this your roundabout way of telling us something, Harry?

Yeah, I got back here in September. I was too busy being frustrated with everything to worry about turning another year older.

...Er. Not really.

... [ thoughtfully ] It's a good question. My birthday is probably completely different back home, but here it's in November, because that's when I knew a whole year had passed... I think that's what counts.

So you'd rather go by Luceti-time than whatever kind of time you have back home?

No... I just think it's more important to count the actual time that's passed. Since that's how much you've really aged, right? Though... maybe it's supposed to be different. I'm not really sure about birthdays, still.

This is the first time I've really thought about it that way. I guess you do end up getting physically older regardless of how you celebrate it.

What aren't you sure about?

...I doubt it matters much here. It's just an issue of how attached you are to the original date.

I can't say I'd hate to lose it, but the time it would've been here was even worse.

Keeping track of your actual birthdate is probably less upsetting than going by the years spent here, anyway. It just depends on how precise you wish to be.

In any case, a year is still a year. It doesn't matter much once you're past adolescence.

I haven't quite figured that much out yet. I've been here a while, but I'm still not sure if this is a forever thing or if I'll get to go home. It might not be worth it.

If I'm an adult, I might just be able to swing that by.

[Hello! Nothing out of the ordinary here, really. It's been a quiet day so far for you, Gryffindork. There hasn't been much activity from House 25, and no sign of a Patronus or anything. However, when Harry least expects it, he'll hear a buzzing noise by his head, feel something zip around it and there's a brief glint of gold hovering in front of his face. Should Harry choose to try and grab it though, it'll take off again.]

[Harry's not entirely sure what to expect from him, since it's not like Draco could just storm into house 25 and bake a cake even now. He's just chillin' for now, but the sight of that little golden ball makes Harry light right up. Broom or no, he still loves quidditch. He expects it to go zipping away as he grabs for it, but that's okay! He'll leave the sword in the sheath he made for it on the porch for now. It's time to go after the Snitch!]

[Ohoho. The Snitch isn't going to be that easy to catch though, considering it picks up speed and darts into the forest. Hopefully you're in the mood for a long run, Potter, because that's what you're going to get. The Snitch is bobbing and weaving through trees and forest brush, occasionally disappearing entirely before twirling around Harry's head. It seems to be headed somewhere that Harry might find familiar, but it's definitely not giving in that easily.]

[Well, considering that it was charmed by Draco - not that Harry knows this - it's bound to be the trolliest Snitch that ever trolled. But still, it's a Snitch, and Harry loves a good Snitch chase as long as it doesn't lead him into impending danger. He'll keep following it, though trying to stop a couple of times to see if it'll wander back to him. It's going to be a nice, long run though.]

I don't know the answer to your question, though. Sorry. Isn't it easier to have it on the date of your birth?

I don't think there's a definitive answer, really. It's more of a feeling. Having it on the normal day makes more sense though.
