Having dated an air traffic controller wannabe for 5 years and been in a few facilities, I can say a few things.
The air traffic controllers monitor airspaces not just air ports so the airplanes don't collide with each other. There needs to be an independent monitoring of the planes in the air spaces. I would recommend privatizing it, maybe then they would be more efficient.
Folks do sleep on the job. He was union and told me he slept all the time as long as someone was on duty. I thought it was unprofessional for him to be sleeping on his job, no matter how tired or over staffed they were. He was a lazy man, glad I am not dating him anymore. Anybody that habitually sleeps on the job needs to get fired.
He was making more money as a trainee in school than I was with a master's degree in electrical engineering working full time with 5 years experience.
Starting salary for someone fully certified in like 2 yrs was like 90k+ plus location premiums for high-cost areas.
