So, we're back to the old black guy raping white women, eh Law and Order: Special Victims Unit? Oh, but I suppose the twist is the black guy who originally got put in jail for being a serial rapist is actually innocent? And Stabler is the one who arrested him, so he goes to the prison and is all like "Oops, my b" and the not-rapist is all "I lost ( Read more... )

You are the only person in the free world who hates this show.

I assure you, you are not. I believe people who tell me that the performances are really moving, I just can't cope with the whole "filmed in rape-o-vision" vibe long enough to enjoy them for myself.

As I've become more lefty/progressive, I find myself being a thing-ruiner more and more often. There's just so much hateful/-phobic shit that I've gotten better at recognizing and less willing to overlook for the sake of being entertained.

Thank you! It sucks, right? The rape-o-vision, the interviewing witnesses while they're loading boxes, the absolute hilarity of the courtroom scenes. SO BAD.

I totally agree with you about the hateful/-phobic shit. I've come to the realization that if my informed assessment sways another person's opinion so dramatically then it was only a shallow viewing that led them to liking something in the first place. If people engaged their brains more often when watching television we probably wouldn't have so much crappy reality tv.

Well, I have to shut off part of my brain in order to watch most things with a legal plotline anyway, but it's mostly the parts that are unique to SVU that I hate. I actually quite liked the early seasons of Criminal Intent.

I don't begrudge anyone who keeps watching a problematic show - how could I, when I can't seem to quit SPN? - so long as they don't take it as a personal attack when I object to, say, the hi-larious misogyny of Two and a Half Men.

Oh man, even if you took the misogyny out of Two and a Half Men it would still be terrible. I wasn't even aware it was so popular until in won all those Emmy's last year.

Yeah, SPN has it's problems (though they pale in comparison to say Heroes and Lost) and I don't really care if someone else doesn't like it, but at the same I don't want to listen to them harp on it for long periods of time. So I worry that I won't be able to find my off switch when rant about the inadequacies of shows like True Blood.
