Italy starts fingerprinting Gypsies

I don't know anyone in Italy or any gypsies and I'm sure my viewpoint on the Roma is probably overly romanticized- but still- I find this article rather horrific. I get checking if they are legally in the country, but fingerprinting? posted mainly for commonreader

How will fingerprinting help determine their country of origin?

I had a professor who specialized in Central and Eastern European History, and he spoke with such love and understanding of the people of that part of the world. Then he told us if we ever visit and were heading up the steps of monuments or museums that we should swing our cameras around our bodies to protect ourselves from the gypsies. I found that to be a bit shocking, but I considered him a reliable, balanced source.
