It's just good old American selfish madness, combined with clever marketing to brides-to-be that if for some reason they don't have the classic White Wedding, their lives will somehow be incomplete
( ... )
i think it's bullshit. i've been to fancy weddings and not so fancy weddings and i can barely tell the two apart. i know a lot of money goes into renting a place to go for the wedding, or the after wedding party and whatever, and from there, people do things like little white plastic birdies with jordan almonds in netting... what the fuck is the point of that? it's all materialistic and ridiculous.
I had a thought once of a "sustainable" wedding, where it's a small gathering, everyone brings their own dishes and silverware and it'd be a potluck. A wedding is about the joining of two people and being with friends.
exactly! i understand that you want to throw a party so that your guests have a good time, but your marriage is about you and your spouse creating your own family. the guests should bring the beer; you're supposed to be buying/investing things for your new "family" like bomb shelters and lingerie.
i planned our wedding for under $2000 and it was beautiful, honestly it was, i had rather had a lovely homeade wedding then start out a new life in debt like so many of my other friends.fiends, ha ha.
$28,000 is just so ridiculous i cant even imagine what you would spend it on.
The best wedding that I have ever been to was held at my aunt and uncle's house in the country (their son, my cousin, got married). I think they may have rented the chairs and bought and prepared food they bought from Costco, but aside from the wedding outfits that was pretty much the extent of the expenses (flowers were also from nearby yards). They got married in the yard, in front of a pond, and the reception was in the side yard by the house. I always thought it would be the ideal place to get married, but my aunt and uncle are trying to sell the house now. The wedding was incredibly relaxing. So that's my ideal.
I love simple, beautiful things. Fresh flowers from the neighborhood are perfect! I'm big on entertaining, so I'd probably want to cook all the food myself, but at the same time, I'd probably want to force everyone else to bring the food . . . and to make something wonderful and delicious!
