First of all, you made me laugh out loud with the nothing was black and white anymore, and she fell in with the most Gray person there ever was pun :)

he'd grown accustomed to having her around - intentional My Fair Lady ref? If so, well done - if not, still well done :)

Little Elle is just heartbreaking. Really, the entire fic is just heartbreaking and not at all what I was expecting from a "fire" fic. Very well done!

And the My Fair Lady reference must have been subconscious. I was just watching it yesterday...

I was taking the prompt in a "fire escape" direction and then it pretty much just wrote itself.

My favorite Decemberists song! Excellent use of those two lines at the end, very haunting.

There's also the nice, subtle actual meaning behind the title beyond the song, which I quite like. Lovely, heartbreaking little fic.
