i've been copy editing for almost 10 years now (holy shit) and there are a few style rules that i never understood. over the years, i've either accepted that i'll never remember or understand these rules, or i've just ignored that these rules exist at all

I'm with you, except that I get the style guide explanation a bit better, I think; if I think of it in terms of comparing AND CONTRASTING, it works for me. But still, that's dumb. Emily Dreyfuss is awesome.
