I'm all for fluff sometimes, but sometimes it's detailed and nuanced descriptions of their darker sides feel so much more real and like them. You captured John's flaws without turning him into a monster, they way he is feels forgivable and understandable in a way.
Anyway, yes, really awesome job :)
