Summary: the not-monsters of page magic

Written for our spnapo "We've Got Words to Do" Challenge.  Come play!

That was the only time I ever heard Atticus
say it was a sin
to do something; it was a sin
to be born. It was a sin
to live, to read after lights-out:
of lost dogs, galahads, normal-boy-
heroics, the jade amulet
now reposed in a niche in our museum,
the not-monsters of page-
magic, the places you’ll never-
when in doubt-wash!-get to,
not without father, brotherlove so
heavy it was a sin to think of places
of human murder, the high wheat plains
of Western Kansas, a lonesome area
that other Kansans call “out there”;
in here, brother-breath, love,
somewhere Saturday morning,
and all the summer world
was bright and fresh, and here,
lamplight, flashlight, the hope that
in him, there was no Darkness at all.

Passages stitched together from To Kill a Mockingbird, Lovecraft’s The Necronomicon,
Paul Gallico’s The Abandoned, In Cold Blood, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and John, 3:3
