I'm with cmonkatiekatie on the His Dark Materials Series. The other one is Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban. I recommend both of them for the same reason - they are utterly original and unique and I have never read anything else that is similar to either of them.

This would be me sneakily using work-based internet access while I still have it.... because I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to pimp the two books that I always recommend whenever anyone asks.

Sky Burial by Xinran. Simply one of the most beautiful books I have ever read.

Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjan. Complex, thought provoking and inspiring.
