I was struggling with what to say about this solar hinge-pin, as I walked around my house, lighting the candles and turning off the electric lights. So I think I'm going to cheat a bit, and give you last year's words first.

It's easy to forget about it, since it's smack in the middle of all the other winter festivities as well. I run into the same difficulty with Imbolc [Feb. 1], but that tends to be more due to excessive snow. :D

I don't celebrate the solstice but I do like to go for a walk on that day, especially when there's a little pale sunshine like it was yesterday. It always makes me really realise that it's the shortest day of the year, the turning point, and that from now on it will get lighter again.
One of the big drawbacks of having a cat is that you have to be so careful with open flames. I really ought to get some more lanterns so that I can have lighted candles everywhere again.

It's pretty marvelous - there's something both magical and soothing about candle-cast shadows. Which I'd forgotten, somehow.
