I still love this poem - it fits Dean so well. The pennies are great - the 1983 ones, the habit of picking them up, the symbolism behind them. I totally see Dean finding meaning in the little things, and in the end it all comes back to his family which is pretty much the definition of Dean's priorities. Beautifully written.

I still love that you love this poem [and love you as well, of course :D].

You know, the more I think about this piece and reply to comments, the more I realize that it's kind of a character manifesto for me. That's a little unexpected - though not *surprising* since the copper imagery has been nagging at me for some time now.

Thank you, H-chan. You continue to rock my socks off with your feedback. :DDD

*twirls you*

Oh, I'm SO GLAD that you like this piece! I was really excited about it, but was a little nervous about the tone [I was afraid it was too moody for a birthday gift]. So - yay, a million times yay! It was an honor to be able to contribute a bit of shiny to celebrate YOU, honey!

MWAH!

oh, Dean... *heavy sigh* this is absolutely gorgeous even if heartbreaking. I can totally see it all.

It’s automatic ritual
customized sign of the cross
a subtle rosary rolling,
spooling out along the road.

so fitting

When it comes to family,
Dean feels it’s always better to be safe;
then you’re never sorry.

again, oh, Dean...

Yeah, 'Oh, Dean...' kinda sums this up nicely. Poor woobie. I like to think the poem swings up a little at the end, that there's promise among the heartbreak. I swear, this fandom is all about the angst for me. One day, ONE DAY, I will find the SPN humor switch! :D [well, I *do* owe you a fluffy Winchester wee fic... that might be where it starts. :D]

Oh, I'm so pleased that your eye snagged on the highway rosary bit! \o/

I probably should have added you to the dedication here, too. Conversations that we've had about SPN and *your* words definitely influenced this poem.

Thank you, as always, for your feedback darling! ♥!

This is lovely. It seems fitting that someone whose existence revolves around the unseen and the dead (the literal dead as well as those beliefs and stories scoffed at and considered untrue) would find succor in superstition too. Not to mention, the solitary quality of the penny (one cent, one abandoned on the pavement, etc.) brings home the solitary quality of Dean's life: the experience, the sadness, the pain (even the hope?) that (despite John and Sam) are his and his alone.

Beautiful.

I love the images of ash and dust in the beginning slowly shifting to the brighter copper of the end. How the collection of pennies moves from being about Mary to being about keeping Dean, Sam, and John connected.

Thank you!

And you know, I hadn't really noticed that shift, from ash-dull to copper-bright. I was consciously aware of working that theme in on an emotional level, but I hadn't realized it worked on the imagistic level. Woo hoo! *laughs*

The connection piece... yeah, that was the cornerstone for the whole piece. I've always thought of Dean as the One Who Binds in the Winchester family. That was the underlying personal meta that informed this piece.

Thank you for reading and commenting, honey!
