Owen had never been on time even once in his life. People (women in particular) told him it was narcissistic, and maybe it was, but mostly, it came down to poor time management. I always seemed when he was meant to be someplace, something slowed him down, sidetracked him. Plus, Owen did like to make an entrance.

Well, whichever the cause, he kept Martha and her dinner waiting. Still, he didn't come completely unprepared - he brought an orchid he'd pilfered from Tosh's garden, stuffed into a vase he found in his appointed bedroom.

He gave her door a light knock and stood back, trying to look half as at-ease as he should have been at the prospect of a date with the lovely Doctor Jones. In truth, the exchange with Tosh had left him unsettled. He was sorely hoping Martha would be the balm to heal him.

Martha had been making last-minute touches, nervously flitting about and straightening everything in the small cottage, occasionally brushing away an imaginary speck of dust. Her mum had taught her the value of keeping things spotless - and though she didn't always stick to it when she was on her own, well, she had to make the special effort to clean for guests. When he knocked, though, she went to the door and opened it, giving him a warm smile and embracing him briefly. "Hello, Owen, glad you could make it," she told him.

Owen took the opportunity to kiss her cheek, speaking into her ear before drawing away. "Like I'd have missed this."

He stood back and offered the flower. "I hope you know how to care for this, 'cause I certainly don't." He was actually known for killing helpless houseplants (along with goldfish, mice, and once, a barn owl). He looked her over, smiling appreciatively. "You look gorgeous, Doctor." Looking over her shoulder, he added, "And even better, it smells amazing in here."

Martha blushed a little - she was going to have to let him down gently, and soon. She took the orchid from him, sniffing it. "Oh, it's lovely! You know, my mum always swore that putting an aspirin in the vase would keep cut flowers fresh longer." She took the vase over to the table and set it in the middle, then picked up the wine and poured them both glasses. "Do you like chicken marsala, Owen?"
