For Kate Austen, the woods were solace. Dangerous yes, but they were her solitude. She’d never quite been as alone as she now felt, she wasn’t quite sure why. Always a nomad, it was her time on the island that she learned she’d been fooling herself the entire time. Maybe it was meeting an Angel that changed her, maybe it was the castle and maybe it was in her imagination
( ... )
It took Basil a moment to realize he was being addressed, so immersed in the blissfully easy, mundane task of applying the watery pigments that he had a delayed reaction to the call.
He blinked at her.
"Ah...y-yes?! It's quite alright." He called back, squinting at her. He was not not terribly threatened by her appearance, so he gestured for her to join him. A bit of normal company would be quite nice.
"This is beautiful," Kate softly breathed in, I do fooling around but I'm not as good as you. Leaning to to admire the strokes, she wondered, "Did you take lessons? I've always wanted to be creative."
And then she laughed. "I"m so sorry, you must want to be alone. I'm Kate, I tend to wander the woods, so don't be surprised it I walk up on you again.
Kate began to take her leave, "don't let me bother you."
"No, please...stay." Basil said quietly. "I might be glad of the company, even if I am a terrible conversationalist whilst I'm working. But I just want a little company." He smiled faintly. "I've only just g-got to this dreadful place and I've yet to meet a friendly face." Not that Marco hadn't been friendly enough, but he had also shaken Basil to his core on top of making him incredibly nervous just by virtue of being a beautiful young man.
Basil seemed to possess the traits she looked for in a best friend, it might be a stereotype; Kate found truth to it in her young life. That wasn't a fool-proof test but it was in Kate's experience. Survival in this place - well you had to forget your past, it was wiped clean.
"Do you think," Kate questioned hestitnaly, that we could travel to some of those places. I think the time room is repaired, I love to the masterpieces through your I need calmness right now, Basil, I saw an Angel, Marco and thing just haven't been the same.
She wasn't worried about sharing it with Basil, it was the truth, and if hadn't see it he would. Secrets had their way of sprouting and taking over like kudzu was taking over Texas.
This was her camouflaged attempt at starting a friendship, only time would tell if they were the stuff friends were made.
"The time room?" Basil said, looking at her curiously. "I've only been here a few days, I don't know what you're talking about." He admitted, though he really wasn't sure he wanted to know. He shifted a little bit away from the girl. Something in her manner made him a little nervous. It was the newness, perhaps; Basil was wretched at making friends.
"Yes, I met Marco. Strange boy. Fair of face but...strange. Much like this place." He said nothing of the book Marco had given him.
"He's indescribable," Kate sat there remembering his wings, that moment - the moment they killed the dog. Suddenly she was cold.
"This place is strange and so are the people in it. Honestly, one doesn't know who is a friend and who isn't - but I have this feeling about you! Sadly, all we have is time, enough to make sure we both aren't 'strange' before we go on adventures.
He needed reassurances as would she had she been in Basil's place, the difference Kate wasn't afraid of him.
"One bite at a time?" The painter finished the adage uncertainly, not sure where she's going with that line of thinking. She talked very fast, it seemed to him. "Y-yes...Marco is...indescribable. Yes...that is a good way of putting it. And..ah...no..a-adventures for me." He replied, gently blotting out some clouds with the cuff of his shirt.

"Do you know how you eat an elephant, Basil?"
