"A Certain Slant of Light" by Karen

Rescuing strange girls from certain death or things best left to the imagination was getting to become more and more of a habit for Sam Winchester and his brother. But then, really, what else where they in the business of saving lives and fighting monsters for? Sam Winchester had never really thought of himself as anyone's hero, but the small, dark-haired girl with the big staring eyes that seemed to stare at nothing from a distance, but up close when she was looking straight at you, then, oh, then, it was like she could stare right through, like you were transparent and everything that one might think to keep bottled up inside was plainly visible; well, Sam, thought, at least to her.

Her name was River Tam. She was a member of a crew aboard a ship called "Serenity." Nice name, not as nice accomodations as he had been led to believe. Considering that he was now light years from home, and that was something Sam was still in the process of wrapping his head around. Earth, at least Earth of in the 21st century, was gone.

Shaking his head to clear it of the inevitable and uncomfortable cobwebs that made his brain feel at least two sizes too big and his mouth taste like someone had stuffed it full with cotton balls Sam ruefully realized that these seemingly maddeningly contradictions were something that Dean Winchester would no doubt have taken in stride.

The head wound he had taken during the scuffle to save River still throbbed but it was dull throb and one that would eventually go away. The doctor aboard the Serenity had examined it once River had told him that he was the one who had saved her from the goons who had accosted them in the bar, the name of which Sam could not recall. The doctor, eyeing him askance, had pronounced the wound, 'Not Serious.'

Sam had not argued the matter mainly because he had been through a hell of a lot worse and the pain of the head wound was nothing compared to the blinding headache that came as the first warning sign of one of his visions. Both their father and Dean called it his 'gift, there were times, as merely the recipient of those visions, seeing the pain, the agony of those people depicted in those very same visions, that Sam would more inclined to call it a curse.

Sitting in the room that served as both a mess hall, and communal area with River sitting beside him on a chair her knees pulled up to her chest and rocking back and forth Sam wondered, not for the first time if in rescuing River he had in fact rescued himself. The headaches and the visions were much less when she was around. Sam smiled, and realized he had a lot to learn about this brave new world that he found himself in; but the lessons, good or bad, dangerous or otherwise could wait a while, at least for a little while.
