At first, Takaya's steps had taken him quickly away from the center of town. But as he reached the last of the outlaying buildings his pace slowed.

He'd been completely prepared not to work alone with Naoe again. The thought of doing that was almost enough to overshadow everything else about this place, from the uncertain promise of war to the talking shellfish.

But the force it must have taken to seal his and Naoe's powers and their souls was enough to make him keep on walking. Whatever he was up against... his current, weaker than ever self couldn't face it alone.

Once again, Naoe Nobutsuna was his only support.

He smelled the man's cigarette's before he reached his position. Had to fight the stupid, sickening urge to inhale more deeply.

"Naoe."

What surfaced was that same, gentle smile that always played across Naoe's lips. It was easy, and it belied his inner turmoil.

"It's good to see that you're doing well, Takaya-san."

He didn't stop moving until he was level with Naoe's shoulder. That way he could stare straight ahead and not have to see the lying face of the man next to him.

"Well? How do you figure?"

It was hard not to flinch at the coldness in Kagetora's voice. It was also very hard not to reach out to him, to pull him into his arms, to drive out that coldness with the heat of something else.

Casually, he slipped his free hand into his pocket as he flicked the ash from his cigarette.

"You appear to be in good health and uninjured. I would consider that 'well,' yes?"
