Father says we did not do so well in the lottery. We are almost eight hundred twenty-five million down in line. I can't count that high, so it must be a long way to the Emperor. Have you read Keith Laumer's "In The Queue"? I stumbled across it a few years ago and this story immediately brought it to mind.

Honestly, I like your take more; the population-growth/class viewpoint is great, and you manage to include more detail and storytelling in a similar length. I won't give away Keith's ending, but it's hard to say which of you did better with it.
