It's weird and fun to find, in the Internet Age and the global culture of commercial ripoffs, that there are still some pockets of Things You Would Never See Anywhere Else. I look at these bikes, and although just looking at them makes my back hurt, I wonder at a) who was the kid who first made one and how did that convince other kids it was cool and b) was that the kid who opened the LBS that is now making them?
yeah, I'm not sure. I've been doing google searches intermittently to find more info about these ... things. They are intermittently respond to searches for "bicicleta planchada" or "bici piso" but the results are mostly fotoblogs of various forms or online marketplaces buying and selling these guys. Anthropological history of a weird national trend? not so much.
fwiw, there certainly seem to be a lot of them, so I don't think it's just one kid.
The bikes also had hinges in the frame, reminding me of reading a book called "The Boneshaker" where a young girl has serious trouble learning to ride her hinged-frame bike. The boys in BA seemed to be able to ride them okay, even in low rider mode. No idea how. :)
