"Hello, Mr. Cris"
"Hello, LittleReader. Did you have a good Halloween?"
"Yup, uh-huh. I was a ninja."
"Did you go trick or treating?"
"Yeah, we went to Belmont. Because rich people live there, and they've got better candy."

He's the best first grader ever.

Around here, everyone pretends to live in the rich neighborhoods, for purposes of school registration and trick or treating.

I thought you mentioned this before, what town is this school in?

I'm asking because I read an article in a local Waltham paper yesterday about a few of their elementary schools (including the one I went to for 1/2 a year) doing this corporate reading program during employee's lunch hours. And Waltham is one town over from Belmont too, so . . .

Better candy in Belmont, like candy is *that* expensive. I love kid logic! :)

Yeah. A mixed sack of M&M/MarsCo is going to cost the same at CVS, whether it's Belmont or North Cambridge or Roxbury. Maybe the difference is how many pieces you get.

I couldn't even give it away in Arlington. Kids were around, but they apparently just go to the houses of people that they know.

I asked him if he got anything neat, and I was half expecting some epicurean Halloween haul like:

"I got some Toblerone from this one house, and then next door they had some grand marnier truffles, and then went to one place with tins of Turkish delight, then the one after that was handing out these delicate Japanese cookies that tasted like an angel dancing on your tongue."

but instead I got:

"we got some stuff. It was tasty."

dude, I've already got him in minor awe of you because you're "my friend who works at the same place where they make Zoids."

Though, he was showing me this Magic Treehouse book about ninjas (Magic Treehouse is a series where kids have this enchanted treehouse that sends them back in time -- it's like Narnia but with an educational spin to it) and I was tempted to bring in some comic books on my next run and introduce him to the GI Joe version of ninjitsu, which is just as historically accurate (or not as they case be) but infinitely more fun.

I would, but there's a strict no-gifts policy on the program (if I get this kid a Zoids gift, then all of the other kids in the program will get jealous)

I'll still ask him what his favorite Zoids character is and let you know. Maybe you can work in some kind of shout-out the next time you need to compose a bio for one of the creatures.
