MsExpat proposed getting drinks at the People's Republic largely because it was her favorite bar when she lived in Central Square and she wanted to drop in on the place one last time before she left for Australia. hmm. granted the vast majority of what I know of Australian politics has to do with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues, but I'm not sure there's nothing to feel guilt and shame over there...

yeah, we talked about that too, specifically with Howard's policy of splitting refugees families and detaining them in barren Micronesian islands. Essentially, you're never going to find a perfect country. Every postcolonial nation has a legacy of ethnic discrimination, whether its European settlers abusing aboriginal peoples or some historical caste system based on lineage / skin color, and most nations are still coming to terms with that, with the recrimination and hang wringing that goes along with it ( ... )
