Summary: Hayato has spent countless Christmases with Ryu but this one is going to be special...

Hayato looked at the snowflakes that were silently falling outside of the café’s large window. He warmed his hand on the cup which was filled with hot coffee and his lips were curved in a small smile. His foot bumped into a table leg when he shifted position and he cursed silently, making the person sitting opposite to him chuckle. He looked into the beautiful brown eyes of the person who’d been the closest to him for as long as he could remember.

“Why is it that I have to spend Christmas with you again?” Hayato asked and Ryu looked at him while taking a sip of coffee.

“Because you can never keep a girl long enough to spend Christmas with her,” Ryu said with a shrug.

“I can keep them,” Hayato grumbled, offended. “I just don’t want to keep them.”

“Then it’s your own fault. Besides, it was you who called me and asked me to spend Christmas with you this year as well,” Ryu looked at Hayato with a raised eyebrow and trailed a finger around the rim of his cup. “I’m sorry that spending it with me turned out to be such a bore that you feel the need to complain.”

“Ryu, I haven’t heard you said so many words at the same time in forever; are you sick?” Hayato frowned and looked at Ryu with worried eyes.

“You’re such an idiot.”

“I probably am yes but that doesn’t answer my question. Are you all right?”

“I’m fine except for the fact that you asked me to go to a café with you and now you’re complaining about having to spend time with me,” Ryu sighed. “It’s like this every year and yet I agree to keep you company every time. I should’ve just said yes to the girl at work who asked me out.”

“Someone asked you out?” Hayato’s eyes widened. “And you turned her down because of me? I’m so sorry, you should’ve just told me and I’d be fine on my own.”

“No you wouldn’t, you’re hopeless without me.”

“You’re right about that,” Hayato chuckled. “Do you remember when I thought that you had betrayed me during high school? I was so mad and I think that I would’ve killed someone if Yamaguchi hadn’t come to bring you back. I was so stupid back then.”

“You’re still stupid,” Ryu pointed out and took another sip of his coffee, ignoring Hayato’s glare.

“Actually I was going to admit that spending Christmas with you every year is way better than spending it with a girl but since you called me stupid, I won’t.”

“But you just admitted it.”

“Oh,” Hayato’s mouth formed an ‘o’ and Ryu hid his smile behind his cup. “Anyway, do you want to order a Christmas cake? We could take it my place and eat it there; I’m becoming tired of those people over there staring at us as if we’re a gay couple or something.”

“Sure,” Ryu rose from his seat first and they hid themselves from the cold waiting for them outside underneath layers of clothes.

Ryu glanced at the group of teenage boys who stared at him and Hayato with open disgust and suddenly he had a devilish idea. He grabbed Hayato’s muffler and pulled at it to make the older boy stumble closer, ignoring his look of surprise, and then kissed him straight on the lips.

They left the café without a Christmas cake and with disgusted yells from the boys ringing in their ears. Ryu smiled smugly while Hayato stared at him with a shocked expression.

“What did you do that for?” Hayato asked. “Now I won’t get my Christmas cake!”

“That’s your only complaint about it?” Ryu raised an eyebrow.

“Well, yeah... I was really looking forward to that cake.”

“We can just buy one somewhere else.”

“Okay, I know of a good bakery near here,” Hayato said.

They walked closely side by side, the way they’d walked together to so many places since they’d first met. Their hands brushed together and the larger, warmer hand clasped the smaller one and the metal on their pinkies clinked together.

“Merry Christmas, Ryu.”

“Merry Christmas, Hayato.”

The warmth inside of them was enough to defeat the frosty weather as snowflakes melted on their skin.
