*laughs* I know! It's so true. This particular image of Dr. Strange is from the very beginning of his career as a sorcerer (in the retelling, anyway), which means they haven't given him the White Stripes Of Age yet, which makes it even worse.
Amusingly, 1960's Dr. Strange doesn't look nearly as similar to Tony as this Dr. Strange does. It's in the face shape--60's Strange has a much longer, narrower face. Also, although this artist doesn't most artists draw Strange with Very Pointy Eyebrows, which makes his expressions all look different from Tony's.
I confess, although I love his outfit in my icon, I miss the White Stripes and Pointy Eyebrows.
The white stripes and pointy eyebrows are key (the stripes let you differentiate him from Tony, while the eyebrows keep him from looking like Reed). I'm also fond of the vague resemblence to Vincent Price.
And the fluffy, curly hair Gene Colan gave him. My mental image of Strange has very wavy/curly hair, like in the end of the animated movie, thanks to Colan.
I confess, I find the fluffy, curly hair kind of weird, especially in combination with the white stripes. The art in which he has it makes him look like a really stuck up, kind of swishy male model, for some reason! I'm not even sure why, but it's definitely my impression there. *g* Which has it's advantages, but doesn't exactly scream "mystic master" to me. LOL.
Off topic but since it's looking like Comic Con is a no go (esp since the weekend passes are sold out)... would it be possible to ask for a favour? You can totally turn it down, I'll understand completely. See, I commissioned an artist online to do some fanart for me, and he sent me the scans and cg'ed colour art to me, but he said I could have the original penciled art too... but it costs like $40USD to mail to Canada. He will be at ComicCon for Friday and he said he'd gladly bring it if anyone I know would like to pick it up for me.
On the topic of Comic Con, we did get a room from the Comic Con bookings system, but between the volume of people bogging down and crashing the service and the way the bookings page operated, it turned out to be impossible to get two rooms in the same hotel. Combine that with the plane ticket and date of arrival/departure issues, and it just isn't anywhere near your budget. :-(
For the art, I totally don't mind picking it up for you. You'll need to remind me just before I leave for the con, though, because I am guaranteed to forget--probably repeatedly--between now and then!
I'm incredibly picky when it comes to icons, I admit.
As you should be! He did come out looking a little jaundiced with the color I used to replace the shadow and texture. That's a much better contrast between the background windowy thing and his skin tone.
I don't have it on hand to check, but I'm pretty sure that my print version of the issue is considerably redder, overall, than the scan. I suspect part of the color issue was an overall change in the balance when it was made digital. All I had to do to make him look less jaundiced and his coat less faded was increase the magenta in the color balance.
Amusingly, I've looked at the various icon versions on a couple different computers, now, and on some of them I totally can't tell the difference and on some of them it's obvious. Ahh, the digital world, land of inconsistency. *g*
Hee! I sort of want him to take the end of his mustache between his index finger and thumb, and then rub it together while laughing manically.
*laughs* I can so see it. *grins*
(I know! Damn it. I was hoping to starve off this new fixation/obsession for a few more months before indulging, but YOU ARE MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT.)
