A/N: So when I say that it's a two-parter fic, I really mean that it's a three parter.
Part one is here and I imagine that part three'll be up eventually.
Claire senses that something's deeply wrong when Peter comes home after his three hundredth date with Simone since she ran away to New York and he's slamming doors and banging around in the kitchen, muttering very unrepeatable things to himself. It isn't safe to go anywhere near him right now because while he's a nice guy most of the time, there are times when his Italian temper rears its ugly head. Those are times when she hides in the bathroom until he goes to bed and in the morning, pretends like she never heard a thing.
Tonight that's not really going to work out because she has homework to do for her GED class and all of her books are currently on the kitchen table. Next time she'll think ahead and stash a spare in the bathroom but tonight she's just going to have to brave the temper and hope he doesn't say something really horrible.
"God--fuck--damnit!"
Claire winces when he swears and hits the fridge with his fist. "Bad night?" she calls, making a face when she actually sounds scared of him.
Peter sighs, and she can hear him tapping his fingers against the counter restlessly. "I didn't know you were home."
"I was just in the bathroom," Claire answers, turning the corner into the kitchen cautiously. She looks arounds for inatimate objects that he could end up throwing at the wall but when she sees nothing in his reach, she relaxes just a little.
"I've been here for fifteen minutes," Peter says, raising an eyebrow at her.
"Girl stuff," Claire answers quickly, knowing that he'll leave the subject alone because of the 'girl stuff'. "That's all."
Peter nods, looking predictably pretty damn uncomfortable. "I'm sorry."
"... for what?"
"Scaring you."
Claire wonders for a moment if he was around Matt sometime in the evening or if he is just suddenly really good at reading her. It's probably the latter, she's never been good at hiding her feelings, especially around him. "You didn't."
Peter gives her a look. "Yes, I did."
Claire shrugs. "I just figure you had a bad night. Everyone's entitled to those."
"Bad night," Peter repeats with a nod. He rolls his eyes, sighing as he passes his hand through his bangs. "You could say that."
"Wanna talk about it?"
"Not really."
"Wanna eat an entire gallon of cookies-n-cream ice cream while I do my homework?"
Peter laughs but shakes his head. "No, I'll probably just head off to bed..."
"At least watch some TV with me," Claire says, moving quickly and blocking his exit to his bedroom. "I promise I won't ask a lot of awkward questions about your date."
Peter laughs again and after passing his hand through his hair a second time, he nods. He'll humor her, if just for fifteen minutes.
Claire flashes him a quick smile and after grabbing her books off the table, directs him towards the living room where she plops down on the couch and he sits down on the chair almost stiffly. He has no idea why he can't relax around her as of late and not knowing only makes him stiffer. She opens her textbook while he grabs the remote and starts to flip through channels.
"Are you sure you don't wanna talk about it?" Claire asks.
"Yep," Peter answers.
Claire frowns a little, tapping the end of her pen against her notebook. "Say I guess what it is. Then will you talk about it?"
"Claire... come on," Peter says with a sigh, "just leave me in--"
"Is it Simone?"
"... anyone ever tell you that you are far too much of a snoop for your own good?"
Claire smiles and lifts one shoulder in a shrug, "I figured since you two had a date tonight and all."
Peter rolls his eyes and shuts off the television. Neither one of them was really watching it anyway and his disaster of a date with Simone seems like a more interesting topic of conversation. For her anyway; he's kind of in the mood to punch in a wall right now. "She thinks I'm in love with you."
If her blood was capable of actually turning into ice, it surely would've done so when those words came out of his mouth. Simone thought he was in love with her, Claire? That couldn't possibly mean that... Claire manages to give him a smile, though it comes out twisted and odd looking on her face. "Wh-hat would make her think that?" she really hates how tight her voice sounds.
Peter hesitates before answering, "It's nothing."
"It can't be nothing," Claire insists, sounding so much more relaxed and she likes that. Relaxed is good. Panicked and over excited is not.
"I might've..." Peter stops, a slight blush creeping up his cheeks. "said your name when, uh..."
"You said my name?" Claire asks, visibly leaning in towards him. Her heart's beating a mile a minute and so loud that she's certain he can hear it. He said her name. Peter said her name when he was with Simone. No wonder she was convinced that he was in love with Claire. Not that Claire would mind that at all. She's been officially eighteen for three months, two weeks, and four days and that's three months, two weeks, and four days too long without being kissed by Peter.
Peter raises an eyebrow at her. "Yeah, but it was nothing."
"But, I--" Claire stops herself. She wants it be something, so badly but he's gotta make the first move. He's gotta look at them and think that it's alright to be with her or else it'll just be like she's some little tart pushing herself on a rich, older guy.
"What, Claire?"
"Nothing," she mumbles, looking away from him and back at her homework.
"Claire," Peter repeats. "What were you going to say?"
"Forget it."
Peter falls silent, watching her start on her essay questions again. "Do you want it to be something?" he asks, softly but it's enough for her to hear and start blushing because of it.
Claire pretends that she isn't blushing and that she didn't hear him. Homework is suddenly not important at all. Getting away from him is. She has no idea where she's going to go, they're kind of in her bedroom and she can't kick him out of a room in his own apartment so maybe she'll go for a walk. "I need some air," she mumbles, shoving her books off to one side and standing up.
Peter moves quickly and blocks her exit like she blocked his earlier. "Do you want me to be in love with you?" he asks.
"Peter, please," Claire whispers, staring at the floor and not him, anywhere but him.
"Oh God, Claire," Peter says, staring at the top of her head. He puts out a hand to touch her hair, but hesitates before his fingers come in contact with those silky locks. "I have to go take care of something," he says, lowering his hand. By the time Claire convinces herself to look up from the floor, he's gone, off to do his mysterious errand.
She's got the sinking feeling that she isn't going to be seeing Simone around anymore.
